A gatefold vinyl is simply a record whose album jacket opens up like a book, revealing a larger spread of artwork, photos, lyrics or liner notes inside. What is a gatefold vinyl?
A standard LP jacket is a single square pocket that holds one record. A gatefold jacket is folded in the middle, so it has two panels that open like a gate (hence the name). Opened up, it's twice as wide as a regular sleeve.
Gatefolds are used for two main reasons:
- Double albums: each panel has its own pocket, so a gatefold can hold two records (a "2LP"), sometimes more.
- Bigger artwork: even single-record releases use gatefolds to give room for a large inside spread, lyrics, or photos.
Types of gatefold jackets
- Single-pocket gatefold: one record, with the fold used for artwork and notes.
- Double-pocket gatefold: two records, one in each panel. The most common type.
- Triple gatefold (tri-fold): three panels, often used for triple albums or deluxe editions.
- Center-pocket gatefold: some designs hold records in pockets that open toward the center fold rather than the outer edges.

How to protect a gatefold record
Gatefolds are more fragile than standard jackets. The fold and the spine take stress every time you open them, and the larger surface area is more exposed to shelf wear.
